The smoke deflectors are designed to move the smoke away from the locomotive in order to give the engineers better visibility.While her normal speed is around 75-80 mph on while high balling, the #844 was built to withstand speeds of up to 120 miles per hour safely!

UP 844 was the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific Railroad and was designated for passenger service during her illustrious career.
