South Africa’s Youth Take Up Train Surfing As Pastime!
Known as “ukudlala istaff” (train surfing), this extremely dangerous sport attracts the alienated youth in Soweto, South Africa!
Lack of skills and opportunity has led to this dangerous sport, with its own legends who consider themselves celebrities. Most of the kids participating in this madness are around 18 years old on average!
They begin their careers by learning to jump on and off the moving trains before moving on to more dangerous stunts, such as hanging precariously from the bottom of a moving train near the wheels! One of the most death defying stunts happens to be standing on the roof of the moving train, all the while attempting to avoid hitting the high-voltage cables, support beams and bridges!
The train’s pantographs are always a danger when they are riding against the 14,000 volt lines that are inches away. Adding to the danger, their bodies could arc the electricity if they get too to the live cables.
We do not recommend ever trespassing on any railroad equipment including riding outside of a train!
