M1 Abrams Tanks Invade The Tehachapi Loop!
Ah, a day railfanning Tehachapi Pass. Nothing out of the usual, freight trains come and go, hauling what they may. You affix your camera on tunnel 2, hoping to get some great footage and then, you hear a train coming. Excellent, this is what you’ve been waiting for! The first BNSF engine approaches, then another, and another, and another…
It takes 5 engines in total to haul this load up the 2% grade of the Tehachapi Loop!Advertisement
Then you begin to see the first of 118 M1A2 Abrams tanks atop 60 flat cars! Quite suddenly you begin to realize this is no longer the normal freight you’d come to expect!
An Abrams tank alone weighs 60 tons, all together this freight is bearing 7,080 tons or 14,160,000 pounds!
It is impossible to not marvel in awe at these machines of war in combination with these powerful locomotives, which just goes to show, that only a train can handle this kind of shipping job!
Have you ever seen tanks or military hardware shipped like this? If so please tell us your story!
