Wyoming’s coal trains average over 15,000 tons when fully loaded!

Besides being the largest coal mining region in the United States, The Powder River Basin, covering parts of both Wyoming and Montana, is responsible for over 40% of the coal produced in the United States. The Buringlton Northern and Chicago & North Western haul the out of the region by using their own lines as well as Burlinton Northern’s 10th subdivision which they both share.

There are approximately 14 active coal mines in the Powder River Basin.

  • 85-90 trains a day move coal out of the Powder River Basis
  • Each train moves through the loading silo at .6 miles per hour and is computer-loaded in appx. 2 hours
  • Each car weighs 116 tons including the car weight
  • Each train carries about 15,000 tons of coal
  • Each train is around 125 – 133 cars and stretches for about a mile and a half
  • Location: Powder River Basin, Wyoming and Montana
