Luxembourg thinks so!

Luxtram recently starting running 21 vehicles based on the Urbos platform which is a family of low floor streetcars.

As you can see, the tram cars are both functionally and aesthetically pleasing.

According to CAF Power & Automation company, “Greentech Freedrive is a system based on ultracapacitors and/or Lithium batteries and has all the technological benefits of EVODRIVE.” Additionally, CAF Power indicates that units are 100% low floor all along for ease of boarding and egress of any type of passenger and effortless walking along the vehicle.

The new trams boast Greentech Freedrive technology developed by CAF Power and Automation. This is an on-board system that accumulates energy for catenary-free running by using rechargeable onboard batteries.

The maximum speed is roughly 70 KM/H or about 44 miles per hour.

The kinetic energy generated during the braking phase is recovered in the battery system set on top of the coaches which starts the recharge process in order to keep the batteries fully charged. The tram also receives electricity while stopped from the catenary lines.

Let us know if you have had the opportunity to ride in one of these unique tram cars. We would love to hear about your experience!
